Why I built PatioDrip™

We all love hanging baskets, but let’s be honest—maintaining them is a struggle. I was tired of climbing ladders, dealing with messy water runoff, and the constant anxiety of asking neighbors to water my plants while I was on vacation (only to come back to dead flowers).

Existing timers didn’t help either. They watered blindly—even when it rained—wasting water and washing away vital nutrients.

I knew there had to be a smarter way. So, I started tinkering in my garage. I wanted a system that watered only when the plant actually needed it—based on weight, not a clock. After a full year of prototyping and testing, the uDripRing was born.

See the video on the right? That basket has been hanging there for 6 months. Since installing uDripRing, I haven't hand-watered it once. It’s thriving, and finally, so am I.

Common Questions

  • It uses gravity, not a timer. The uDripRing continuously "weighs" your properly hydrated hanging basket. When the soil dries out and becomes light, the valve opens to let water in. Once the soil restores the original hydration and heavy enough, the valve automatically closes. No batteries, no electricity, and no programming required.

  • Not at all. The system is designed for easy DIY installation and typically takes less than 10 minutes. You don’t need any plumbing skills or special tools—just a pair of household scissors to cut the tubing to the right length.

  • No—and that’s the best part! Unlike traditional timers that water blindly even during a storm, uDripRing is smart. Rainwater naturally makes the basket heavy, which keeps the valve closed. It saves water and prevents root rot by ensuring your plants are never overwatered.

  • Absolutely. The system is fully modular. You can easily connect multiple baskets to a single faucet using the included Tee fittings. Whether you have 1 basket or 20, you can customize the layout to fit your porch perfectly.
